Cos'è il sandalo?

Originario dell'India meridionale, il sandalo è un albero le cui principali varietà oggi in profumeria provengono da Australia, Nuova Caledonia, Sri Lanka e Tanzania. Soprannominato "Re dei boschi", il legno di sandalo occupa un posto importante nei rituali indù dove viene utilizzato per la sepoltura dei corpi, la costruzione di templi e la realizzazione di bastoncini di incenso. L'Alfa-Santalolo, una delle sue molecole principali, è responsabile delle virtù terapeutiche attribuitegli nella medicina tradizionale cinese, tibetana e ayurvedica, mentre il Beta Santalolo, molecola lattiginosa che ricorda la madeleine e l'amaretto, lo ha reso famoso in profumeria. È il Santal Album d’Australia che conferisce al nostro legno di sandalo la sua sfumatura leggermente cremosa.
